New professor aims to crack the code for respiratory infections

Christian Kanstrup Holm, a newly-appointed professor at Aarhus University, conducts research into infections of the airways and investigates at the cellular level why some people become ill from viral infections, while others go free.

Autumn has made its entrance, thereby also ushering in the high season for viruses that infect the airways, e.g. influenza and covid. Newly-appointed professor Christian Kanstrup Holm of the Department of Biomedicine conducts research into respiratory infections and the defence mechanisms that provide natural protection, so that some of us avoid becoming ill.

At the molecular level, Christian Kanstrup Holm aims to understand what it is that brings about the symptoms of viral respiratory infection, and why, for example, the covid virus makes some people seriously ill, while others may not even notice that they have been infected. He examines, among other things, what it is in our cells that creates a natural bulwark against infection, which means that we can avoid an inflammation in the body and thereby also a more serious illness. The aim is to generate new knowledge that can help to prevent infections of the airways.
