New Deputy Head of the Institute
Professor Ole Bækgaard has been appointed as Deputy Head with responsibility for education, which includes being chairman of the teaching committee of the Department. Thanks to Ole Sonne for the great effort he has put in the work as Chairman and as part of the Department's leadership team.

The Rector will visit the Department
It will happen the 22 May at 1 PM in the Bartholin Auditorium.

Applications for funding for travel and training
The Department continues to support travel and training. The next deadlines for applications for support for training, study and conference travel (VIP) is June 1st for travel occurring from 1st July to 31 December, with the introduction of a third annual application deadline. Next deadline for courses (TAP) is also June 1st. The information on the web page and the application forms are being updated. Questions may be directed to annimh@mikrobiologi.au.dk.

May 1st
On request, staff at the Department of Biomedicine can have time off on 1 May if the work permits. Freedom the May 1st must be agreed by the closest leader.

Professor Søren Nielsen resigns from AU
Professor Søren Nielsen has decided to resign from his position as a professor at the Department of Biomedicine effectively from May 31 2014. We wish Søren the best of luck with his new activities.

New funding opportunities from the Novo Nordic Foundation

  1. INTERDISCIPLINARY SYNERGY. Support is possible for 2-4 research groups from any scientific or technical discipline that join to solve a common research questions in biomedicine and biotechnology. The project must be interdisciplinary, focusing on the stimulation of synergy between research groups. Grants up to DKK 15 million is given for a 3 -year project. Deadline 6th of June.
  2. DIABETES. The focus for 2014 is: Prevention of diabetes and acute and late complications of diabetes. The program gives 2-4 research groups in biomedicine opportunity to establish smaller, interacting entities with a common mission and vision. The groups' expertise, scientific discipline and location are not limited as long as the principal applicant and the host institution are placed in Denmark. Up to DKK 60 millions can be granted for a six-year project. Deadline: June 10th.

Margrethe Møller Foundation
Margrethe Møller Foundation ( http://www.mmfonden.au.dk)  is now open for application by younger scientists with a deadline of May 5th 2014 for the period July 2014 – July 2015. It is possible to apply up to 5,000kr for participation in scientific meetings or shorter stays at research institutions outside Denmark. The topic must be membrane transport proteins or transport across cellular membranes. The application should contain CV, project description, publication list and should be addressed to advokat Carsten Jensen, SCS-Huset, Østergrave 4, 8900 Randers and sent either as a hard copy or by e-mail to:  cj@louadvokatfirma.dk .

Fine article in PNAS
Anna Lindeløv Vestergaard, Stine Mikkelsen, Bente Vilsen and Jens Peter Andersen from the Department have made the article: Critical roles of isoleucine - 364 and adjacent residues in a hydrophobic gate control of phospholipid transport by the mammalian P4- ATPase ATP8A2. Supporting for internationalization of PhD education
There are grants for: 1) Recruitment of international research talent to doctoral studies at AU (1-3 months stay); and 2) Stay at AU for PhD students enrolled at universities abroad (3-6 months stay). Application deadline is 19 May 2014 and the applicant is the international student contact / co-supervisor of Health. For more information, contact Lise Wogensen Bach / Tanja Hansen.
