Further information:

Safety
There have been a couple of incidents with intruders in the Bartholin and biochemistry buildings. If you come into contact with intruders – do not expose yourself to any risks. If the intruders do not leave the building when asked, then immediately contact the police on phone 112. Do not attempt to lead people out of the building by yourself. If you observe intruders, then contact the nearest secretariat and ask them to post an alert/warning mail to everyone in the building. We are in contact with the Technical Department to improve the safety in all our buildings.

Procedures for TAP employment
Our local Cooperation Committee (SU) has prepared guidelines for the recruitment of TAP. The guidelines must ensure that no recruitment takes place if elsewhere in the Department an employee’s job with the same skills is insecure (financially). Procedures in relation to recruitment begin with a contact to the Head of Department. The guidelines still need a few corrections before they will be posted at our website.

Construction
The proposal to extend the period of our major construction projects to first construct the new building and then renovate the Bartholin and anatomy buildings, will be on the university Board’s agenda on 24 April.

Prestigious awards to the Department

Congratulations to all three!

Minutes from the management team meetings
The management team meets every Monday and minutes from the meetings are now posted at the Department's website: http://biomed.medarbejdere.au.dk/udvalg-og-moedereferater/ledelsen-referater/

New Nature Article
Jesper Vuust Moller is author on the article: The sarcolipin-bound calcium pump stabilizes calcium sites exposed til cytoplasm. Anne-Marie L. Winther, Maike Bublitz, Jesper L. Karlsen, Jesper V. Miller, John B. Hansen, Poul Nissen & Morten J. Buch-Pedersen. Nature 495, 265-269 (14 March 2013).
The article deals with the structure of calcium ATPase in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SERCA). Congratulations to Jesper.

News from the graduate school
AU is party to a series of international PhD programmes involving enrollment at AU with a scholarship from the programme, but not employment as a PhD student. Recent examples are Science Without Borders and the Erasmus Mundus Action 2.  In order to accommodate PhD students from these programmes, the Graduate School has expanded their framework for full funding with a third option:

  1. Employment with external funding on the usual PhD terms.
  2. AU employment on the usual terms, i.e. as a PhD fellow.
  3. International scholarship for a PhD programme supplemented with weekly employment for 10-15 hours according to the AC Agreement Annex 5b.

The employment is funded by the employing unit (i.e. mostly the research group). In addition, three years’ tuition fees. The additional recruitment of a minimum of 10 hours a week ensures the student a reasonable total income, unemployment benefits during sickness and maternity, holiday pay, insurance coverage and the required amount available for continued residence as a student. The maximum for foreign students' work is 15 hours a week.

Dissemination on the website and changed/new application guidelines are being prepared. Until then, please contact Tanja Hansen (th@sun.au.dk) or Julie Kolding Olsen (jkolsen@sun.au.dk) at HE Research and Talent for more details if you wish to take advantage of this opportunity.

Science without Borders and 3 Erasmus Mundus Action 2 programmes provide scholarships to fully financed PhD studies at AU for students coming from respectively Brazil (deadline 31/5) and the Western Balkans, the Middle East and South Africa. In addition, both programmes provide scholarships for study and research stays (staff/postdoc). More information about Science without Borders is available at http://swbdenmark.dk/ or contact Tanja Hansen (th@sun.au.dk) who will also inform about the possibilities of the Erasmus Mundus Action 2.

Best regards

Thomas
