The course is only for postdocs and assistant professors.

The five-day course “Fundamentals of Academic Writing” provides participants with fundamental and easy-to-apply principles and practical writing strategies to help them publish their academic writing.

The course consists of five sessions:

  • 1. Laying the Foundation for Clear Writing: 24 Oct. at 14:30-17:30
  • 2. Effective Drafting: 31 Oct. at 14:30-17:30
  • 3. Effective Editing: 7 Nov. at 14:30-17:30
  • 4. Fundamentals of the Publication Process: 14 Nov. at 14:30-17:30
  • 5. Communicating Your Research to Wider Audiences: 21 Nov. 14:30-17:30

The course’s starting point is a fundamental instruction of the journal Nature: ‘Imagine your research as telling a story. Start by asking a big question and form a logical argument.’  But what constitutes a ‘logical argument’ is often only implicit rather than explicit in English and specific to different cultures and disciplines. This course builds participants’ confidence and chances of publication by teaching them how to make the implicit explicit, so boosting the effectiveness and efficiency of their writing for publication.
