Abstract

The plasma membrane plays a much broader role than only being the outer boundary of the cell. The integration of the physical (mechanosignaling) and chemical signals of the microenvironment is key for efficient cell migration. We will focus in two examples: i) the role of danger signals and ion channels during leukocyte migration, and ii) the role of membrane oscillations and the cyto-skeleton during mesenchymal migration.

Pablo obtained a Bachelor of Sciences in Biology, and later a PhD in Biology, m/ Physiology, at the Pontifical University of Chile, Santiago, Chile. Then moved to Paris, France as a postdoc at the Immunity and Cancer Unit (Institut Curie, Ana-Maria Lennon's lab), and then continued his training at the Cell Biology and Cancer Unit (I. Curie-IPGG, Matthieu Piel's Lab / MOTILE group). In 2020, Pablo was appointed as a Professor and Principal investigator at the UKE-Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany. There, Pablo established the Cell Communication and Migration (CellComM) Lab, an international lab with members from Germany, Spain, Ireland, and has hosted internships from UK. Pablo is also interested in scientific communication and outreach as shown by his participation in the eLife ambassadors program, and scientific art exhibitions.
